Advanced Firefighting Course (Theoretical)

Fire is one of the greatest risks in the maritime industry, and ship personnel must be fully equipped to handle such emergencies. The Advanced Firefighting Course (Theoretical) is conducted in accordance with STCW 78 Convention Regulation VI/3, Code A-VI/3, and Table A-VI/3. Developed based on IMO Model Course 2.03, this course is mandatory for seafarers who need to manage firefighting operations, organize fire teams, and gain technical knowledge about fire prevention and response.

This course focuses on fire prevention, firefighting tactics, and emergency management onboard ships. The theoretical training covers various fire types that may occur on vessels, methods for fire response, fire team organization, and post-fire reporting procedures in detail.

Participants will learn about fire classifications, extinguishing methods, and firefighting equipment, gaining the necessary competencies to conduct safe operations at sea.

Who Can Participate?

This course is open to seafarers who meet the requirements set forth in the Seafarers’ Regulation and require advanced-level firefighting training. Specifically, it is mandatory for:

  • Personnel assigned to firefighting duties on board ships,
  • Officers and engineers who will lead firefighting teams,
  • Crew members responsible for ship safety and emergency management.

The Primary Objectives of the Training Program

The main objective of this course is to equip trainees with the following competencies:

  • Prevent and control fires that may occur on board,
  • Effectively manage firefighting systems used in emergencies,
  • Organize firefighting teams and lead fire response operations,
  • Implement safety measures and evacuation procedures during shipboard fires,
  • Learn firefighting techniques in compliance with international regulations and standards.

Training Duration

Total Duration: 3 Days (21 instructional hours)

  • Day 1: 7 hours (Theoretical)
  • Day 2: 6 hours (Theoretical)
  • Day 3: 8 hours (Practical)

Training Content

The training includes theoretical knowledge and simulation-supported practical lessons.

Day 1: Fire Chemistry and Fire Prevention

  • Fire classifications and fundamental fire characteristics
  • Fire prevention and firefighting equipment
  • Fire protection measures
  • Fire extinguishing methods (water, foam, gas, and chemical extinguishers)
  • Firefighting procedures in port and at sea
  • Effects of water-based fire extinguishing on ship stability

Day 2: Firefighting Organization and Risk Management

  • Risks that may arise during fire response
  • Firefighting methods for hazardous materials
  • Organization and training of fire response teams
  • Leadership and crisis management in firefighting
  • Communication and coordination in firefighting
  • Collaboration methods with shore-based fire services

Day 3: Fire Suppression Systems and Practical Training

  • Fire detection and suppression systems
  • Fixed and portable firefighting equipment
  • Maintenance and use of fire extinguishers
  • Hands-on fire response exercises with realistic scenarios
  • Investigation and reporting of fire incidents

Evaluation and Certification

At the end of the course, an exam will be conducted in accordance with the Seafarer Training Courses Regulation. Participants who successfully pass the exam will be awarded a “Course Completion Certificate” approved by the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs, and Communications.
