Basic Training for Oil and Chemical Operations Course

The safe and internationally compliant execution of cargo operations on oil and chemical tankers requires great precision. The Basic Training Course for Cargo Operations on Oil and Chemical Tankers is conducted in accordance with STCW 78 Convention Regulation V/1-1, Code A-V/1-1, and Table A-V/1-1-1. Based on IMO Model Course 1.01, this program aims to provide fundamental knowledge and skills in cargo handling, safety procedures, and emergency response.

Oil and chemical tankers are specialized vessels that transport hazardous cargoes, which are flammable, explosive, and potentially harmful to the environment. This course covers the safe transport of oil and chemical cargoes, the management of loading and unloading processes, and working in compliance with international safety regulations.

Participants will gain an understanding of essential safety protocols, environmental risks, and emergency response techniques, ensuring safe working practices in tanker operations

Who Can Participate?

This course is open to seafarers who meet the requirements specified in the Seafarers’ Regulation and are required to complete Basic Training for Cargo Operations on Oil and Chemical Tankers. Specifically, it is mandatory for:

  • Officers and crew members who will serve on oil and chemical tankers,
  • Personnel responsible for cargo operations,
  • Seafarers involved in tank cleaning, cargo handling, and related processes.

The Main Objectives of the Training Program

The primary objective of this course is to equip trainees with the following competencies:

  • Safely managing loading and unloading operations on oil and chemical tankers,
  • Identifying hazards during cargo operations and implementing risk reduction measures,
  • Preventing environmental pollution and ensuring compliance with MARPOL 73/78 and other international regulations,
  • Understanding the necessary safety precautions for ship personnel,
  • Gaining fundamental knowledge of tank cleaning, gas-freeing, and inert gas systems,
  • Learning firefighting and emergency response procedures for oil and chemical tankers.

Training Duration

Total Duration: 2 Days (14 instructional hours)

For full-day courses: 7 instructional hours per day.

Training Content

Training includes theoretical knowledge and simulation-supported practical lessons.

Day 1: Tanker Systems and Cargo Operations

  • Types and general structure of petroleum and chemical tankers
  • Use of cargo pumps, piping systems, and valves
  • Basic principles of loading and unloading operations
  • Tank cleaning, gas-freeing, and inert gas usage
  • Physical and chemical properties of petroleum and chemical substances

Day 2: Safety, Fire Fighting, and Emergency Management

  • Health and environmental hazards of petroleum and chemical cargoes
  • Chemical reactions, corrosive substances, and explosion/ignition risks
  • Fire prevention and firefighting methods on tankers
  • Emergency procedures and emergency shutdown systems
  • Prevention of petroleum and chemical pollution and environmental protection measures

Evaluation and Certification

At the end of the course, an exam will be conducted in accordance with the Seafarer Training Courses Regulation. Participants who successfully pass the exam will be awarded a “Course Completion Certificate” approved by the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs, and Communications
