Oiler Training (IMO 7.09)

The Oiler Training (Ratings Forming Part of an Engineering Watch) (IMO 7.09) is a theoretical and practical training program designed to enhance the mechanical and electrical knowledge of seafarers qualified as oilers on commercial ships. The course covers engine operation principles, lubrication, maintenance, and emergency management practices while also providing competencies in marine life, environmental protection, and ship safety.

This training program is developed in accordance with international and national maritime standards, including:

  • STCW 78,
  • SOLAS 74,
  • MARPOL 73/78,
  • National Education Basic Law No. 1739,
  • Vocational Education Law No. 3308,
  • Private Education Institutions Law No. 5580.

As EKOL Maritime Training Center, our Oiler Training Course Program aims to train competent, well-equipped professionals who meet international standards in ship machinery and electrical systems, maritime safety, environmental protection, and professional practices.

Who Can Participate?

    • Education Level: Minimum primary school graduate
    • Age Requirement: Candidates must be at least 16 years old
    • Target Audience: Individuals aspiring to become seafarers with an oiler qualification on commercial vessels

Main Objectives of the Training Program

The Main Gains Expected from Trainees with This Program Are as Follows

Understanding Maritime Life and Culture:

Loving the sea, adapting to ship life, and acquiring the minimum competencies required for the profession.

Implementation of Watchkeeping Procedures:

As a crew member in the engine room watch, understanding and following instructions to ensure a safe and efficient watchkeeping system.

Boiler and Emergency Procedures:

Maintaining correct water levels and pressures in boilers, operating emergency equipment, and applying emergency response methods.

Acquiring Mechanical and Electrical Knowledge:

Learning general knowledge of main and auxiliary ship machinery, as well as electrical systems, to understand the operating principles of ship engines.

Duties Required for the Oiler Profession:

Fully understanding the tasks, duties, and responsibilities defined for the oiler qualification in the engine department.

Basic Maritime Safety Training:

Practicing professional applications in Personal Survival Techniques, Proficiency in the Use of Lifesaving Appliances, Fire Prevention and Firefighting, Basic First Aid, and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility to demonstrate the correct attitude and behavior in emergencies.

Human Relations and Social Responsibility:

Developing positive attitudes and values while working on board and increasing awareness of personal rights and responsibilities.

Marine Environment Protection:

Implementing measures to prevent marine pollution, learning environmental protection methods, and being willing to apply them.

Training Duration

Total Duration:

The course duration is 32 days.

Weekly Schedule:

  • 8 hours per day,
  • 5 days per week = 40 hours/week.

Detailed Time Distribution:

  • Theoretical Training: 29 days (5 weeks + 4 days) × 8 hours = 232 hours,
  • Basic Maritime Safety Practical Training: 3 days × 8 hours = 24 hours,
  • Total Duration: 232 + 24 = 256 hours.

Evaluation and Certification

Assessment and Certification

At the end of the course, candidates will undergo oral, written, and practical examinations in accordance with the Seafarer Training Courses Regulation.

Trainees who successfully pass the exams will be awarded a “Course Completion Certificate.” This document officially certifies that the candidate has obtained the oiler qualification and successfully completed the professional training program.
