Operatinoal use of ECDIS Training Course

The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) Course is organized under STCW 78 Convention Regulation II/1, II/2, and II/3, Code Sections A-II/1, A-II/2, A-II/3, and IMO Model Course 1.27 for seafarers aiming to ensure navigational safety and master modern navigation technologies. This training aims to provide ship officers with internationally standardized competencies in the accurate and effective use of modern nautical charts and electronic navigation systems.

The ECDIS Course is designed for the following seafarers who are required to use electronic chart systems professionally under the Seafarers’ Regulation:

  • Captains and deck officers,
  • Ship personnel involved in navigation operations,
  • Maritime students seeking proficiency in electronic navigation systems.

Main Objectives of the Training Program

This course aims to equip participants with the following competencies:

  • Effective use of electronic chart systems,
  • Analyzing ship navigation systems to ensure safe passage,
  • Interpreting data displayed on the ECDIS screen to identify errors and risks,
  • Understanding the differences between electronic charts and manual navigation methods,
  • Accurately analyzing ECDIS data to plan a safe route.

Training Duration

The ECDIS Course consists of a total of 40 instructional hours:

  • Theoretical Instruction: 20 hours,
  • Practical Training: 20 hours,
  • Full-time courses: 8 hours per day, totaling 5 days.
 

Training Duration

Day 1 – Introduction to ECDIS and Legal Requirements

  • ECDIS carriage requirements,
  • Types of electronic charts (Vector and Raster charts),
  • ENC (Electronic Navigational Chart) structure and data quality.

Day 2 – ECDIS Operation and Navigation Sensors

  • Display of information on ECDIS and management of chart layers,
  • Integration of Radar and AIS data into ECDIS,
  • Navigation sensors and accuracy analysis of sensor data.

Day 3 – Route Planning and Monitoring

  • Selection of navigational areas and safety checks,
  • Route creation and safe voyage planning,
  • Identifying hazards along the route and corrective actions.

Day 4 – Updates and Navigational Safety

  • Updating electronic charts,
  • Automatic and manual update systems,
  • Navigational safety checks and alarm systems.

Day 5 – Emergency Scenarios and ECDIS Simulation

  • Accuracy verification of displayed data,
  • Analysis of erroneous data displays,
  • Real-time ECDIS simulations for training and assessment.

Evaluation and Certification

At the end of the ECDIS Course, trainees are required to take written, oral, and practical exams in accordance with the Seafarers’ Training Course Regulations. Those who successfully pass the exam are awarded the “ECDIS Course Completion Certificate,” approved by the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs, and Communications.
