Medical First Aid Training Course

The Medical First Aid Training Course, organized for maritime personnel to respond to emergencies that may occur on board, is conducted under STCW 78 Rule VI/4, Code A-VI/4. This training, arranged within the framework of IMO Model Course 1.14, aims to develop the emergency medical intervention skills of seafarers. The course ensures that officers on board become proficient in providing first aid in maritime settings.

Who can participate?

This course is open to individuals who are required to obtain a Basic First Aid Certificate according to the Seafarers’ Regulation. It is especially crucial for captains, officers, and ship personnel.

With this training, participants are aimed to:

  • Manage emergencies that may occur on the ship,
  • Provide proper intervention to the casualties,
  • Learn basic and advanced first aid techniques,
  • Recognize and use first aid equipment used on the ship,
  • Become proficient in areas such as respiratory support, bleeding control, and burn treatment.

Training Duration

The training duration is a total of 18 class hours, planned over 3 days, with 6 class hours per day.

Training Content:

Day 1

  • First aid applications in case of accidents or illnesses aboard
  • Use of first aid kit and basic equipment
  • Exposure to hazardous materials and poisoning
  • Burns, and the effects of heat and cold

Day 2

  • Assessment of the casualty and initial intervention
  • Spinal injuries, fractures, and dislocations
  • Handling respiratory obstructions and drowning emergencies
  • Initial intervention for electrical shocks and bleeding

Day 3

  • Rescue and safe transportation of casualties
  • First aid techniques at sea and use of the ship’s medical facilities
  • Getting medical advice via radio and pharmaceutical knowledge
  • Intervention for heart attacks, shock, and sudden fainting

Evaluation and Certification

At the end of the course, written and practical exams will be conducted according to the Maritime Personnel Training Regulations. Candidates who score 60 or above will be considered successful and entitled to receive the “Course Completion Certificate.” The certificate is approved by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and ensures that the maritime personnel gain the required competencies in accordance with STCW regulations.
